    NLIC: Church Directories

NLIC members may remember that a year ago we had a church picture directory company come in to take pictures with the promise that they would provide church directories.  As you may have guessed by now, we have had some problems getting those directories.  The company, MyChurch Directories, had some problems fulfilling their commitment to provide the directories.  I spoke to them this week and they said we should be receiving the directories sometime within the month.

Go and Plant Churches of All Peoples

New Life in Christ Church is actively seeking to start two new churches ("church planting") - one a church in North Stafford County with Pastor Leonard Bailey.  The second church we are trying to plant is with Alejandro Martinez among Latinos in the region.  The strategy and work of church planting is explained very well in this article in Christianity Today.  Please pray for the success of these two new church endeavors.  We want to help lost seekers find and trust Jesus Christ as their hope, their leader - their salvation.

    Bring Back the Sabbath

Do you rest?  I mean do you biblically rest?  Is rest something that you work for?  Even our recreations can be a lot of work.

A Jewish author, Judith Shulevitz wrote an excellent article (link - Bring Back the Sabbath) on the Sabbath a few years back, it is worth reading and doing something about.

Let us work at resting and seeing God face-to-face.  It will fix our perspective in this highly-driven age.

The Triune God: The Fountain of Love

    Jonathan Edwards -

"God is the fountain of love, as the sun is the fountain of light. And therefore the glorious presence of God in heaven fills heaven with love, as the sun, placed in the midst of the visible heavens in a clear day, fills the world with light. The apostle tells us that "God is love"; and therefore, seeing he is an infinite being, it follows that he is an infinite fountain of love. Seeing he is an all-sufficient being, it follows that he is a full and overflowing, and inexhaustible fountain of love. And in that he is an unchangeable and eternal being, he is an unchangeable and eternal fountain of love.

There, even in heaven, dwells the God from whom every stream of holy love, yea, every drop that is, or ever was, proceeds. There dwells God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, united as one, in infinitely dear, and incomprehensible, and mutual and eternal love .... And there this glorious fountain forever flows forth in streams, yea, in rivers of love and delight, and these rivers swell, as it were, to an ocean of love, in which the souls of the ransomed may bathe with the sweetest enjoyment, and their hearts, as it were, be deluged with love!"

    Friends?

Should a man and a woman be good friends?  Suzanne Hadley answers this question with incredible wisdom in her article Not Your Buddy.  The title seems to answer "no", but it is a bit more nuanced than a simple answer.  The key thing, and we will speak about this tomorrow evening during our class on dating and relationships, is that our intimacy (in this case emotional intimacy and the physical intimacy of hanging out) must always match with our commitment.  Guys don't always care if they are leading a girl on if it solves a need for companionship.  But he must realize that hanging out with a gal for an extended length of time builds intimacy, so if he doesn't have commitment, he is lying to her.

Read the article.  For both male and female, it's very good.

    Avoiding Jesus

From Tim Keller's sermon on the Prodigal Son.

[S]in is running from God - avoiding, escaping, saying "I don't need you!"

Flannery O'Connor grasped this when she said of one of her characters, "There was a deep, black, wordless conviction in him that the way to avoid Jesus was to avoid sin."  How could that be?  Here is a man who knows that the only way to avoid Jesus as Savior is to avoid sin.  If I feel I am a good person, I may look to Jesus as Example, or as Helper, or as Strength - but I won't rely on him for every breath and obey him unconditionally.  If I am a good person, then I have rights - Jesus owes it to me to listen to my prayers, to protect and reward me.

Salvation comes through Christ alone.  We all need to see that we are sinners first.  Once we see our sin, then we see Jesus is the solution.  If we deny our sins, we will miss Jesus.  To miss Jesus is to miss salvation itself.  When we see our sin - Jesus becomes a relief and He becomes our salvation and we get all the promises of faith through Him.

    YoungLives in Fredericksburg

YoungLives in Fredericksburg is an important ministry giving hope and help to teen mothers.  Katie Pirch is leader of the YoungLives branch and attends our church.  She has an exciting opportunity right now that I wanted to print it ...

    Dear Friends,

A pretty incredible opportunity has presented itself. This morning I
received an e-mail from my boss, Scott Hamilton, letting me know that an
anonymous giver has offered YoungLives Fredericksburg a $4,000 matching
fund. What this means is, that if we raise $4,000 by the end of this fiscal
year, then this donor will double that amount making it $8,000.
Opportunities like this DO NOT present themselves very often. As some of you
know, this has been a difficult year financially for us and this could
potentially erase our deficit and start us off fresh for this next year.
This financial year ends on Sept. 30, which means that I would need to
receive all fund by Sept. 29. As supporters of YoungLives, I would like to
ask you all to consider a few things:

    1) Please start praying now that the right people would be approached about
participating in this opportunity and that the Lord would do a miracle in
the next week and a half.

    2) Consider giving to the fund. Every little bit counts...even if you feel
like it may be small. All checks can be made payable to YoungLives and
mailed to me at: 9824 Dominion Forest Circle, Fredericksburg, VA 22408.

    3) Help me by recommending people you know who may be interested in
    participating in something like this.

I will be calling some of you to make sure that you received this e-mail and
to see how you may be able to participate. Thanks so much for your support!

    Joyfully,

    Katie

    All My Tears

I like this song, All My Tears, hadn't heard it until yesterday.  I guess it is a Jars of Clay song (just learned and downloaded that one).  I like the Jars of Clay song okay, but the one I linked rocks.

Jars Of Clay - All My Tears Lyrics

When I go, don't cry for me
In my Father's arms I'll be
The wounds this world left on my soul
Will all be healed and I'll be whole.
Sun and moon will be replaced
With the light of Jesus' face
And I will not be ashamed
For my Savior knows my name.

It don't matter where you bury me,
I'll be home and I'll be free.
It don't matter where I lay,
All my tears be washed away.

Gold and silver blind the eye
    Temporary riches lie
Come and eat from heaven's store,
Come and drink, and thirst no more

It don't matter where you bury me
I'll be home and I'll be free
It don't matter where I lay
All my tears be washed away

So, weep not for me my friends,
When my time below does end
For my life belongs to Him
Who will raise the dead again.

It don't matter where you bury me,
I'll be home and I'll be free.
It don't matter where I lay,
All my tears be washed away.

    I Asked the Lord

Yesterday, we heard one of the most excellent and challenging songs I have heard for a long time.  Mary Jane Kittredge sang it beautifully yesterday, but the words are so powerful.  The point: pray that God would help you grow, hang on in the midst of difficult circumstances, and you will see God transform you.  God is so much more concerned about our character than about solving our outward difficulties.

    I Asked the Lord

    1. I asked the Lord that I might grow
In faith and love and every grace
Might more of His salvation know
And seek more earnestly His face

    2. Twas He who taught me thus to pray
And He I trust has answered prayer
But it has been in such a way
As almost drove me to despair

    3. I hoped that in some favored hour
At once He'd answer my request
And by His love's constraining power
Subdue my sins and give me rest

    4. Instead of this He made me feel
The hidden evils of my heart
And let the angry powers of Hell
Assault my soul in every part

    5. Yea more with His own hand He seemed
    Intent to aggravate my woe
Crossed all the fair designs I schemed,
Cast out my feelings, laid me low

    6. Lord why is this, I trembling cried
Wilt Thou pursue thy worm to death?
"Tis in this way" The Lord replied
"I answer prayer for grace and faith"

    7. "These inward trials I employ
From self and pride to set thee free
And break thy schemes of earthly joy
That thou mayest seek thy all in me,
That thou mayest seek thy all in me."

    Death of a Hero

No, not Pavarotti, D. James Kennedy who died September 5 at age 76.

As the following articles for Christianity Today explain, this man transformed the way churches evangelize in America.  I am in deep gratitude for Evangelism Explosion, which taught me about the gospel, and how to share my faith.  Our church uses EE to teach the gospel to ourselves and to visitors.  These three articles give great honor to the grace of God in this man's life:

    D. James Kennedy Dies at 76
    Guthrie: Remembering D. James Kennedy
    The Coral Ridge Strategy

I especially am encouraged by this quote:
"Now, I know that someday I am going to come to what some people will say is the end of this life.  They will probably put me in a box and roll me right down here in front of the church, and some people will gather around, and a few people will cry. But I have told them not to do that because I don't want them to cry. I want them to begin the service with the Doxology and end with the Hallelujah chorus, because I am not going to be there, and I am not going to be dead. I will be more alive than I have ever been in my life, and I will be looking down upon you poor people who are still in the land of dying and have not yet joined me in the land of the living. And I will be alive forevermore, in greater health and vitality and joy than ever, ever, I or anyone has known before."

I put Kennedy in a list of modern day saints who (from a distance) helped transform my life:
Bill Bright - founder of Campus Crusade for Christ - where I became a Christian
Rich Mullins - his music still inspires me
