From the NLIC Peru Missions Team

Subject: Adventures in Kusi [Peru]

Buenos tardes a nuestra familia en Cristo!
(Good Afternoon to our family in Christ!)

We have arrived here in Kusi.  Below are some highlights of our time here so far.

1) Kusi- Kusi continues to grow more and more in its beauty located in the "Alps of Peru" and its number of buildings.  At this point in time, they have 6 bungalows for the work teams, a kitchen, cafeteria, school, dorms for the boys, house for the dorm parents, and several other buildings under construction.  It has come a long way from 3 years ago when I was here and there were only two buidlings with roofs and no windows or doors.

2) Boys- The number of [street] boys [(boys abandoned by their parents)] here at Kusi has grown from 5 last year to 22 this year.  They range in ages from 8 to 18.  What a fun group they are filled with energy and smiles!  We eat every meal with the boys and in the afternoons and evenings we spend social time with them.  They love to play soccer against us, and most of the time they win.  Last night, they performed choreographies for us to Latino Christian music.  I tell you, they definitely have rhythm and put us gringos to shame¨)  Tonight, they are going to teach us some of their dances.  The choreographies are a positive way to channel the boys energy while incorporating much of their culture.

3) Construction Work- From 9am to 4pm, we help the workers in the construction of the buildings at Kusi.  We have been doing everything from making adobe bricks, hoisting adobe bricks up ladders on to the tops of the new buildings, wheelbarrowing adobe and rocks to where they are needed, jumping in the mud and hay to make the adobe (my personal favorite), etc.  We definitely end each day tired and sore, but joyful knowing that we are serving our Peruvian brothers and sisters in Christ.

4) Prayer Requests-  We would ask for prayer for continued safety in the construction work and good health.  On Thursday, VBS will begin for the boys at Kusi and the surrounding area.  Pray that all the details will come together and we have the opportunity to spread the Gospel and the love of Christ to the young people of Yungay (the surrounding pueblo).  Pray for continued unity within our team and protection from Satan´.s attack.  On a ligher note, I know that many of us would appreciate prayers for warm showers too:)

These are only a few of the highlights of what God is doing here.  Our team will be very excited to fill in all the details when we return.

Blessings,
Kari on behalf of the team

1656 or 2007?

John Owen wrote, “If vain spending of time, idleness, unprofitableness in men’s places, envy, strife, variance [inconsistency], emulations, wrath, pride, worldliness (1 Corinthians 1) be badges of Christians, we have them on us in abundance” (Mortification of Sin, 2006:56).

The Height of Villainy

John Owen makes a fantastic point in his book The Mortification of Sin.  Our sin is never content with the ground it has gained in our lives.  All sin wants to grow.  Bitterness wants to grow to outbursts of anger.  Lust to adultery.  Greed to larceny.  Sin is not content with being small, that is why we must always be on guard against it.

“Every rise of the lust, might it have its course, would come to the height of villainy; it is like the grave, that is never satisfied”
(Mortification of Sin, page 12).

Don't Let Down Your Guard

John Owen - “When sin lets us alone we may let sin alone; but as sin is never less quiet than when it seems to be most quiet, and its waters of for the most part deep when they are still, so ought our contrivances  against it to be vigorous at all times and in all conditions, even where there is least suspicion.” (Mortification of Sin, page 11 (2001), 51 (2006))

The Desires of Jesus

Now that is the will of God which Christ both did and taught. Humility in conversation; steadfastness in faith; modesty in words; justice in deeds; mercifulness in works; discipline in morals; to be unable to do a wrong, and to be able to bear a wrong when done; to keep peace with the brethren; to love God with all one's heart; to love Him in that He is a Father; to fear Him in that He is God ... this is to fulfill the will of the Father.

- Cyprian

Love and Country Music

Is this the progression of love in our culture (according to famous country songs)?

  • Falling in Love (Infatuation) –Dreamin’ with My Eyes Open (Clay Walker)
  • Commitment – Love Without End, Amen
  • Family – Two of a Kind Workin’ on a Full House (Garth Brooks)
  • Frustration – You Ain’t Much Fun (Toby Keith)
  • Unfaithfulness –Your Cheatin’ Heart (Hank Williams Senior)
  • Divorce – Going Through the Big-D and Don’t Mean Dallas
  • Anger- Here’s a Quarter, Call Someone who Cares
