February 27 Grace and PaulWe have been studying the life of Paul and the early church as a family. Grace, my three year old, had good insight the other day as she commented,
"When he was Saul he wanted to put people into jail,
but when he was Paul he wanted to put people into heaven."
She is a smart one.
See Acts Chapter 9 for the story... February 24 Amazing GraceThis movie was good (www.amazinggracemovie.com). I had high expectations for the movie and it surpassed even those high expectations. It was not a cheesy Christian or sentimental message. The cinematography is excellent and the acting is convincing. A few things stand out to me. First, the perseverence of Wilberforce - he endured through tremendous opposition, the rejection of his best friend, and slander. If anyone is going to change long-held beliefs in this world we must persevere. Second, the faith of Wilberforce. The movie did not dumb this aspect down even though it was not produced (as far as I know) by a Christian. Why would someone oppose the slave trade and at the cost of his own name? Only because He believes God has called him to the task. Wilberforce realized that he could serve God by being a politician. May God give us more godly political leaders! Third, the marriage of Wilberforce and his wife. Behind any man who will accomplish anything is a woman who is spurring him on. This movie shows a Wilberforce about to crumble and give up, but marriage spurs him on with a new passion. It spurs on our imagination to think about how marriage makes both men and women. Fourth, the gospel affects culture. At one point in the movie Wilberforce points out that the people want an end to the slave trade. His chief opponent says in an incredulous voice, "People?" Only through the American system of government do the political elite see that their job is to serve the people. Anyway, Amazing Grace (www.amazinggracemovie.com) is one of the best movies I have seen and request that everyone sees this movie. We need more high quality movies like this, movies with a good message and quality workmanship! New Projector at New LifeJeff McConnell, Robin Wilson, the deacons, and some others have taken leadership in getting a new projector and screen installed at New Life in Christ. The screen is wired and functional. Next step is to put in the projection system. Soon we will no longer be using overhead projectors on both sides, but can have one central system that is bright and clear for everyone to use. This will be a helpful too as we worship the Lord in years to come.
February 09 Local Marine Killed in IraqThis article (http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2007/022007/02082007/257851) recounts the life of Joshua J. Frazier, a local Marine killed in Iraq. Sergeant Frazier was the cousin of Joe Tate, a part of our Young Adult Care Group and member of New Life in Christ Church. Please pray for Joshua's family and for Joe as they deal with this loss. February 06 40 Days of FastingToday is my last day of a three-week fast. Though I am hungry and look forward to eating tomorrow (watch out refrigerator!), I have felt better for these three weeks than for a long time. The main reason I feel so good is because I sense a closeness to God that comes only when a person is dependent upon Him. Not eating for 21 days tends to make one dependent as discouragement, depression, and hunger kick in. How can I survive and continue but through prayer! As I pray, I sense His strength and ministry. I want to invite everyone to join me next year, January 2008, to join me for all or some part of my 40-day fast. I fast every year for a different length of time, and, Lord willing, next year is my chance to go for 40-days. Right now, I plan to start on our church's day of fasting and prayer on January 2, 2008. Why fast? Basically, I think fasting is expected of all Christians. I hesitate to say it is a command because I know some people literally cannot fast. Still, I think it is an expectation. Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount said to his disciples, "Whenever you fast..." (Matt. 6:16). Jesus expected that we would fast for periods of time and cry out to our heavenly Father. Fasting is mentioned many other times through the Bible. The best book I have read describing fasting and prayer is by John Piper, "A Hunger for God: Desiring God through Fasting and Prayer". The title gives away the point - by stripping away all of our earthly securities by starving our bodies, we cultivate a hunger for the only thing that can really satisfy our deepest hungers - Our Savior and God. Pick up a copy and read it today. This year I fasted and prayed for five specific things:
I covet your prayers for me, my family, our church, our city, and our nation. If you are interested in joining me for a fast next year, let me know, and if enough people want to do this, we can have a couple classes training you how to fast, how to do it safely and how to get the most out of a spiritual fast. As I mentioned above, the best book for this is John Piper's book "A Hunger for God: Desiring God through Fasting and Prayer". Some key things to do in 2007 are to pray about fasting, build your "fasting muscles" through short periods of prayer (1-3 days) and fasting, and seeing a doctor to ensure that you are healthy enough to fast. Let me know and we can seek the Lord together. February 05 More than you wanted to know about soapI took chemistry once. Now I know how helpful it is, I understand soap.
I wonder how they made soap before they knew all this about soap... February 03 Wyoming CowboyA Wyoming cowboy was herding his cows in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?" The cowboy looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, "Sure, Why not?" The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his AT&T cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite navigation system to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo. The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, "You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves." "That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says the cowboy. He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. Then the cowboy says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?"
The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, "Okay, why not?" You're a Congressman for the U.S. government" says the cowboy. "Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"
"No guessing required." answered the cowboy. "You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You tried to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don't know a thing about cows.... “Now give me back my dog."
February 02 Keeping the Faith in CollegeFebruary 01 Importance of Young Adult MinistryListening to Albert Mohler from last week, and he made an interesting point (link)...
"If you take a snapshot of the people in the church on Sunday morning, you can almost always tell if the church is growing or not ... Kirk Hadoway [reports] (page 3), 'To be sure, the average parishoner tends to be older than the average American [...], but a congregation where a large proportion of the members are older tends to have a cluster of characteristics that inhibit growth. [...] Churches that you find no young adults you find virtually no growth.' The presence of young adults is the most important [...] pictured issue you could have in the local church."
He goes on to say that if you took a picture of the local church Sunday morning at worship and see lots of young adults at a local church, you are probably looking at a growing church. If you do not see young adults you are not looking at a growing church. This is because "young adults are the growth edge and the growth rim of the church."
The reason why this is a good picture of a church is that young adults are the hardest to reach group because of increased entertainment and secularization. If a church can reach these groups they have the ability to adapt and impact the culture.
Pray for the Young Adult ministry at New Life, for our youth, for our children, that we would pass the torch of our faith and they would receive it. Where to Plant ChurchesIn this article (link), northern Virginia is growing gangbusters. Stafford and Spotsylvania counties have had 30% growth since the year 2000. What our communities need very badly is more churches. I am guessing we did not see a 30% growth in churches during the same period. Statistics shows that 19% (Spotsylvania) and 12% (Staffod) of people go to church on a typical Sunday. We have a lot of work to do.
You will also notice that there are places the population is growing even more quickly - the cities. Loudoun County, close to Washington DC, grew 59%. Pray for our cities that the Lord would raise up church planters. |
